Last year it caused 27 deaths in Southern California. Already this year, West Nile Virus (WNV) has been confirmed in all the above counties and more reports can be expected. We are especially vulnerable due to the prolonged rainy season and accompanying accumulations of puddles and still water in stream beds, gutters; literally everywhere. Where ever water can accumulate, mosquitoes will find it to breed. Just a tablespoon of water can produce hundreds of mosquitoes. WNV has been called the fastest moving (spreading) vector (biting) disease in our history! It affects both humans and birds. If you find a bird that has died recently, particularly a crow, jay, raven, or magpie, call and report this to your Vector Control office. If you have been bitten, your symptoms are like a cold with fever. Get advice and on which type of insect repellant is really effective and the numerous precautions and measures you want to take in and around your home and garden as you venture outdoors this year. Its up to YOU! April 05 |
