A national bestseller, Funny in Farsi is the memoir of a 10 year old girl from Iran, who in a series of essays, chronicles her life from childhood to adulthood. She shares with us episodes, both personal and family, as she and they gradually grow less Iranian and more Californian. FirooZhes story, told to the Los Altos RC, is delightfully refreshing, often very funny, sometimes a bit sad, as she relates part of what happened as she tells how the family coped and found their way in a new land. For instance, her experiences at school with a difficult to pronounce name are both mirthful and pitiable, especially when one realizes this happens to a bewildered child all alone and unable to speak English. Some of the mispronunciations of her name are hilarious, a few obscene. Celebrity Forum founder, Dick Henning, a member of Los Gatos RC, highly recommends the FirooZhe program, which for those familiar with his nationally famous speaker series, is the highest rating a speaker can get. Autographed copies of Funny in Farsi, are offered by an independent local shop. Part of the take goes back to the club. Oct 2004 |
