The Map

From HCMC, we headed down for a two-day sojourn to the Mekong Delta, and settled in Vinh Long. Dana’s uncle, Robert Sadler, was stationed in Vinh Long in 1968, and had taken several photographs of children and civilians during his time there. Prior to the trip, Sadler reprinted his photographs and suggested that Dana and the team seek out those who were the subjects of his photography. Upon arrival in Vinh Long, the team immediately began seeking out elders in the town who would be able to help us find the subject’s in Dana’s photographs. After a half-day of searching, we put the project on ‘hold,’ took a great twilight ride down the Mekong, and headed to dinner.

During our dinner, the restaurant owner greeted us and sat with the team. Roy engaged in a discussion of where he was at during the war, and Dana showed him the pictures. After taking a good look at them, Binh, now a member of the search party, identified a photograph that he believed would bear fruitful results. The tip-off for Binh, however, was not found in the people in the picture, but rather, two slaughtered pigs! Binh stated that there was one person living in Vinh Long at the time who raised pigs, and that he would seek them out later that night and check to see if any identifications could be made.

The team adjourned the search for the day, headed out for a drink, and went to bed early – a rather uneventful evening. Binh met with us the following day and stated that he had a match and that he would like to take us to meet the family in the morning. We all headed out just a bit outside the main part of town and met with the daughters, son and cousin of two of the men in Dana’s uncle’s photograph! Success! Dana, Tri, Roy and Michael took several pictures, swapped stories and addresses, and got a kick out of matching up a thirty-year old photo with people living today. Quite an experience.

We headed back to Saigon that night, pleased with our success. That night, the group ate one final dinner in Saigon together at a beautiful Vietnamese restaurant, and grabbed one last Tiger beer in the city.
