The Map

From Ha Noi, we headed north to visit the ethnic hill tribe people, and got quite far off the beaten path via a several hour long bus ride. The GSE team from northern California toured fisheries facilities along the way, and the group, after a 10 hour day on the bus, settled in for a large dinner and entertainment by the warm people of Mai Chau for the night. The team slept in elevated bamboo huts and awoke to screeching roosters and blathering pigs, and was soon off to further investigate the northern provinces.

The next day we we're off to more fisheries.  The ride took 14 hours, meandering through the northern hill passes. We encountered massive road construction and very slow going, and many of us were often bounced out of our seats by massive pot holes every 100 yards or so. The scenery was breathtaking, and even with stifling heat the team had a great time talking with one another and sharing vocational expertise along with personal histories.

About seven hours into the 14 drive we stopped at a VACVINA village. VACVINA has a number of projects for eradicating malnutrition within the tribes and to teach them better hygiene, farming and related processes. They presented us with three project proposals, toured us through the village and adjoining school, and showed us their medical facility (a one-room wood structure with few supplies) that services all the tribes in the region. Incredible to see what they are doing with such little resources.

We left the village with 50+ smiling and laughing kids in our wake, all sporting their GSE pins and team giveaways and headed on to our next stop seven hours down the road and spent the night in Yen Bai.

On our way back to Ha Noi the next day we visited additional fisheries sites. Overall, the hill tribe excursion was fabulous, although bus #14 did get a little tiring at times. :)
