The Map

On to Ha Noi, Viet Nam - charming, peculiar, quirky. We arrived in Viet Nam on March 9 and immediately began our vocational work.  This date also corresponded with the global announcement of the SARS outbreak :).   Our first day we toured local temples and rested up for our upcoming vocational work.

Our first meeting was with the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce, and the four concurrent teams presented themselves to a rapt audience of forty-plus. The goals of the VCCI are to protect the interests of the Vietnamese business community and to develop both foreign and domestic business ties. Upon completion of the program, all GSE team members broke off into discussions with local Vietnamese businesspeople.

The day followed with meetings at the US State and Commerce Departments via the US Embassy. Meetings at the Commerce Department focused on USAID and US investment into Viet Nam, along with a brief on what business issues stem from the US and Viet Nam via the BTA (Bilateral Trade Agreement). The GSE teams finished the day by attending a dinner hosted by the Ha Noi People's Committee.

On our final day in Ha Noi, after returning from three days traveling in the North, we visited the World Bank and Ha Noi Business School. Karen, Michael then met with a Telecoms and Agricultural Specialist for lunch.

The Ha Noi Business School was quite interesting, and the team spent two hours with nine students from Viet Nam's first English speaking MBA program. Roger Ford, an inactive Rotarian, was the facilitator of the exchange and GSE team and students alike left having discussed much information.

We finished the day with a visit to the SOS for Children's orphanage, where might delivered clothes and donations to the orphanage for a friend.  Michael's friend has been sponsoring Mahn, the young boy with the red tie in the middle of the picture to the right, for the last seven years.
