What is favicon.ico

Favicon stands for "Favorites Icon": if the icon is placed in the web site and the site is added to the Favorites, then the icon appears along side the Title of the page in the Favorites list, instead of the usual generic symbol. Moreover, when the page is called from the Favorites, the icon will be displayed in the address bar along side the address! This works for IE 5 and up. The latest Netscape will display the icon in the address bar of a site that has the icon.

Instructions to Club Webmasters
  1. right click on the above icon and save it to your hard drive making sure not to change it's name: favicon.ico
  2. either place the icon in the root directory of your site (where your pages are)
  3. or in the various folders or directories of your site
  4. or place it anywhere in the site and include a LINK tag within your pages, in the HEAD, pointing to the icon, like this:

    <HEAD>
    <TITLE>Title of your site</TITLE>
    <LINK rel="shortcut icon" href="/your/path/favicon.ico">
    </HEAD>
    <BODY>
    ...
Note: A problem that crops up occasionally is that the icon is uploaded in ASCII mode, and it should be in binary mode. And don't title your home page "Welcome!", or "default page", etc. The tile is what will be displayed in the Favorites and Bookmarks, and in the search results of search engines. Make it meaningful, like "District 5170 Rotary"
