Press Release

Project undertaken in Oakland by Rotaractors and Interactors

The Rotaractors and Interactors are from several Rotary Districts in the Bay Area. The project highlights the important work that the youth groups are both willing and capable of doing. In addition to the power of combining clubs to work on a project.

5170 has Rotaract and Interact Clubs. They all are looking for members. Read this Press Release and then look around your workplace, your neighborhood, your church groups, and of course your own families. Encourage any of the 18-30 year olds you know to look into Rotaract and the high schoolers to look into Interact. You are doing them a favor and also recruiting future Rotarians.

Have a question about Rotaract, contact Donn Wadley at dwadley@netloans.com, or for Interact, contact Lee Fort at lee_fort@csaa.com

Volunteers paintingOn Saturday, April 28th, Rotarians, Rotaracts and Interacts joined Rebuilding Together Oakland (RTO) at a small private preparatory school for a big event. It was the third and final weekend spent renovating Candell's College on 73rd Avenue in Oakland, a haven for 80-90 inner-city students from kindergarten through high school. After a pastry and a cup of hot coffee, the early morning assignments got underway. Rotaractors and Interactors worked side-by-side with Rotarians and other volunteers painting classroom, hallway and lunchroom walls, exterior painting and landscaping, adding baseboards, and helping with any task, large or small.

At lunchtime the BBQ crew came in with hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the fixings to sustain the volunteers on what was a particularly hot day. It's safe to say no one left hungry! With full bellies, the entire group gathered for a picture wearing their RTO t-shirts and energetic smiles.Picture wearing RTO t-shirts and energetic smiles

As a special surprise, Dr. Terence Candell was presented with a large sign for the exterior of his school which brought a round of applause - and more than a few watery eyes - from the crowd. Students shared how they never used to like going to school until they enrolled at Candell's College, which has made it possible for each senior in seven graduating classes to be accepted to a four-year university.
