Community Service Frequently Asked Questions
- Does RI have any established guidelines for community
service projects?
- RI has a number of resources available on its website
including "Working
in the Community: Implementing Effective Service Projects"
and an assessment tool to assist each club in determining
community service needs. Each club should work with
community members to define community needs and determine
projects.

- How can I promote an effective project that we have
established in our club?
- Share the information with the appropriate district
chair and your district governor for promotion in his/her
monthly newsletter. Send the information to RI for inclusion
in the Community Projects Database and other RI publications.
Finally, display the project at a district conference
or at the RI Projects Exhibition held at the RI Convention
each year.
- What was Rotary's first service project?
- Rotary's first community service project was carried
out in 1907, shortly after the organization was founded,
when the Chicago club built a public comfort station
near City Hall. With this inaugural project, Rotary
became the world's first service-club organization.
- What is the difference between community and vocational
service?
- Community service and vocational service often overlap.
For example, a community might need an outlet for youth
to develop job skills to improve their marketability.
This could be considered either a community or a vocational
service project — or both. Vocational service is a specialized
type of service, through which Rotarians can utilize
their vocational skills or improve the vocational talents
of their community members. Community service is broader,
and includes all other types of local service projects.
