2006 Media Recognition Awards

Public Relations Media Awards were presented on April 30, 2006 by Rotary District 5170 at the annual District Conference. The award was given for professional excellence and service in the field of media and media relations. The selections were made based on a standard of excellence and a reflection in the work of “Service Above Self”. The recipients of this year’s award are:

  • Bruce Barton, Editor of the Los Altos Town Crier newspaper
  • Michelle Beaver, News Reporter for the Daily Review in San Lorenzo
  • Henrietta J. Burroughs, Founder and Editor of East Palo Alto Today
  • Gray Cathrall, Editor of the Piedmont Post Mei
  • Huey Huang, South Bay bureau Chief for the World Journal Newspaper
  • Cheryl Jennings, Media Anchor for ABC7 KGO TV
  • William & Sharon Marshak, Owners/Publishers of the What’s Happening, Inc. – Tri City Voice
  • Moryt Milo, Editor of the Campbell Reporter
  • George Sampson, News & Program Director of KLIV News
  • Dick Sparrer, Editor of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times

The District Media Awards is given to non-Rotarian journalists (print, electronic, or visual) who have, in the current Rotary year (since July 1st), most effectively captured the essence of Service Above Self and/or community up-build in his or her work, and conveyed it to a broad audience

The District, its clubs, its membership, and those of its Rotaract, Interact, and Inner Wheel family, recognizes the vital role played by the media in informing the public and decision-makers, and seek through these awards and recognition to highlight the important contributions to community service, action learning, and understanding made by the winners of the 2006 Media Awards.

Nominations are welcomed in the following four categories:

  1. Newspaper, Magazine and Major Print Publication.
  2. "New Media" (video, radio, internet-based media).
  3. Photojournalism.
  4. Community Media (community, local, in-country media of all types, including newspaper, community radio and internet-based

Nomination Criteria:

The award is given for distinguished examples of reporting as a tool for service and community up build. Nominees include institutions or independent journalists reflective of the Rotary Four Way Test. All works are to be characterized by a high caliber of writing, accurate reporting, and emphasis on influencing public behavior through education on the issue.

  • Entries may be made by any individual or organization from material appearing in print or electronic media
  • Entries must be made by individuals or organizations located in the District 5170 geographical area
  • Entries must be submitted in writing or electronically with a nomination letter, and example of nominated work.
  • Eligible works must have been published or aired between July 1, 2005, and March 31, 2006.
  • Selection of the awardees is based on the quality of the reporting as well as its wide reach among readers and viewers

Recognition of Awardees

Awardees will be recognized on several levels:

  • Local recognition by the nominating Rotary Club.
  • Rotary District 5170 in its electronic and print media.
  • District and public recognition during a special Media Award Presentation at the 2006 District 5170 Conference, April 28-30, 2006.
