A native Californian, Roger Hassler was raised in El Monte, nineteen miles east of Los Angeles. After graduation from high school, he joined the U.S Air Force serving for four years, the last year in Viet Nam. Upon discharge he continued his education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from California State College Los Angeles. Roger started his professional career as a Retail Store Controller for Sears in 1971. His Sears career took him to the Eastridge (San Jose) where he met Angie, who was the Personnel Manager, they were married in 1977. In 1989 he was the manager at the Sears Distribution Center in San Leandro, when he made the decision to leave Sears and start his own Allstate Insurance agency, where he has won many of Allstate’s top sales awards. He recently decided to sell the property and casualty side of his business in order to concentrate on the financial services area. In January of 1990 Almaden Valley club President, Jim Dowling, came into Roger’s office and asked if he would be interested in joining Rotary. After 18 years of working for Sears, and “all of our friends were Sears employees” Roger was looking for a way to get to know people in the neighborhood. Roger has served on almost every board position for his club and was President from December 1996 to June 1998. He has been named Rotarian of the Year twice by his club, once sharing the honor with Angie, the second time on his own. Roger has served the District by being a member of the Scholarship Committee, the Finance Committee, and Youth Service Chair. He will be the District Conference Chair in 2009. Both Roger and Angie are multiply Paul Harris Fellows, and are Rotary Foundation Benefactors. |
